Built in Video Card, is there a way to...?

My husband's computer has a built in Nvidia video card. It's not in a slot, but actually attached to the motherboard. It's going out and needs to be replaced. Is there a way to add a secondary card or do we simply need an entirely new motherboard?|||you are referring to integrated graphics. Yes you can add a new graphics card. You may have to disable the onboard graphics in some cases, but the new card you purchase should tell you if you do or dont how to do it. Visit tigerdirect.com to purchase a new graphics card, they have some good prices there. You can also compare at newegg.com|||You can install a stand-alone graphics card and the motherboard will use that over the built-in one.

Check to see what type of slots the motherboard has (pci-x, agp, pci ) and buy one that will fit.

Depending on the card, you may need a molex splitter to power the card if your power supply doesn't have extra plugs.

And just remember to plug the monitor into the new video card, not where it's plugged into now :0)|||Whoa, hold the phone here!!

You posted this in Hardware>Add-Ons.

If your reference is to a DESKTOP computer, then yes, this is possible.

There is an Expansion slot on the motherboard for a graphics card.

The computer might use the PCI expansion slot, or the AGP expansion slot, or the PCI Express x16 -> expansion slot.

Technology, of these graphics expansion slots, is listed in order they came out.

(A PCI Express x1 slot, is NOT used for a graphics card.

IF your reference is to a LAPTOP computer, it's VERY, VERY doubtful!

Most (About 98 percent) laptop's use Integrated Graphics. This is a GPU that is soldered to the motherboard. (See GPU above)

There is NO changing this BABY OUT!

Hence my answer you see here!

VERY, Very, few, laptops have a dedicated graphics card.

In fact, IF this is a reference to a laptop, I'm SURE your laptop doesn't use a graphics card.

May seem like I'm sticking my neck out with that statement, but I'm telling ya', laptops that use Graphics Cards are few, and in-between!|||It would be good if you post some specs. you could of give us some info for ex. if is a dell , hp, etc.. I'm guessing a PCI Express, ...

Yes, if you go to a electronics store best buy, frys, etc..and ask in there they can give you a Video Card that can work with your computer, but don't let them install it becuase it's gonna be a little exp.. you can do it...
